This comprehensive strategy, outlined in the university's "Teacher Quality Enhancement and Specialized Development Plan for 2024-2027," emphasizes a holistic approach to developing highly skilled and compassionate educators equipped to thrive in the evolving educational landscape.
Central to this initiative is the "STEAM Golden Triangle Curriculum Design Team," established within the Department of Applied Mathematics. This collaborative body brings together university professors, experienced K-12 educators, and industry experts to develop cutting-edge courses that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Student teachers benefit from this interdisciplinary approach, gaining practical experience in STEAM pedagogy.
Ji-You Lin, a student teacher from the Department of Early Childhood Education, praised the program's efficacy, highlighting the engaging and practical nature of an AI course workshop. "The instructor encouraged critical thinking and interaction," Lin remarked. "The course deepened my understanding of various teaching methods and showed how to implement them effectively."
Beyond technical expertise, NUTN prioritizes cultivating humanistic values in its student teachers. The university's Rural Education Micro-Program, a cornerstone of this effort, creates long-term partnerships with schools in remote areas. This program not only provides vital support to disadvantaged students but also provides invaluable experience for student teachers, fostering empathy and a commitment to equitable education.
Jui-Yu Hsu, a NUTN graduate and current full-time teacher, participated in several rural education camps during his studies. Recalling the experience, Hsu noted, "Witnessing the children's thirst for knowledge, often hampered by limited resources, solidified my commitment to education. I aim to empower children through transformative learning opportunities."
NUTN President Hui-Ping Chen underscored the university's dedication to evolving its teacher training model, building upon its century-long legacy in education. "Our 2024 teacher certification exam pass rate of 85.31%, significantly exceeding national averages across all programs, demonstrates the impact of our Center for Teacher Education," Chen stated. "We will continue to cultivate 'innovative teachers' equipped with both humanistic care and professional competency, driving educational reform and embodying the spirit of 'Future-Oriented Interdisciplinary Practice and Local Implementation.'"
