Academic Research Overview and Policies
NUTN consistently carries out approximately 350 research projects each year, with total annual funding ranging from NT$230 million to NT$330 million. On average, each faculty member conducts 1.24 to 1.32 projects annually, with average funding of NT$949,300 to NT$1,275,400, reflecting sustained investment in research and resource allocation.
To encourage faculty research, NUTN provides transitional grants of up to NT$100,000 through a two-stage review process for proposals not initially funded by the National Science and Technology Council. From 2023 to 2025, 28 projects received support, and nearly 40% later secured NSTC funding, demonstrating that the internal grant mechanism serves as an incubator for research capacity rather than merely a safety net.

Sustainability Research Directions
In 2025, NUTN conducted approximately 389 research projects, of which 153—or 39%—were highly related to sustainability. This indicates a shift from individual topic selection toward a collective research direction aligned with global sustainability challenges. SDG 4 Quality Education was the most frequently addressed goal, reflecting the University's long-standing strengths in teacher education and educational innovation. SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 15 Life on Land followed, corresponding to NUTN's two major research priorities: green energy technology and ecological conservation.

Growth in Academic Publications and Research Support
Growth in the Quality and Quantity of Academic Publications
The number of SSCI-indexed articles increased from 14 in 2024 to 28 in 2025, nearly doubling. SCIE-indexed articles also rose from 53 to 69, demonstrating steady accumulation and significant growth in research capacity across the sciences, engineering, and social sciences.
NSTC Transitional Grant Mechanism
Faculty whose NSTC proposals are not initially approved may receive up to NT$100,000 in transitional funding. From 2023 to 2025, 28 projects were supported, and nearly 40% subsequently obtained NSTC funding, making the program an incubator for research capacity.
Sustained Research Investment
NUTN consistently maintains approximately 350 research projects per year, with total annual funding of NT$230 million to NT$330 million and an average of 1.24 to 1.32 projects per faculty member, demonstrating continuity and balance in research resource allocation.

New Species Discovered in the South China Sea: NUTN Researchers Describe Bathynomus xishaensis
A research team from the Department of Biological Sciences and Technology described a new deep-sea isopod species from waters near the Paracel Islands, named Bathynomus paracelensis. Genetic analysis and morphological comparison confirmed that it had not previously been recorded. Published in an international SCI journal, the finding contributes significantly to understanding deep-sea biodiversity in the South China Sea.
