To enhance cybersecurity awareness and promote digital security education, National University of Tainan (NUTN) hosted an Information Security Seminar on May 19, 2026. The University invited Rich Tener, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Information Technology Services at Iowa State University, to deliver a keynote lecture on the importance of cybersecurity in higher education and practical strategies for safeguarding digital environments.
As the unit responsible for the University's information infrastructure and cybersecurity operations, NUTN's Library and Information Technology Center has long been committed to strengthening campus cybersecurity systems and enhancing the digital literacy of faculty and students. Inviting an internationally recognized cybersecurity expert to campus reflects the University's proactive efforts to advance cybersecurity education and foster a more secure digital learning environment.
Rich Tener holds a degree in Computer Engineering and has led Iowa State University's cybersecurity team since 2019, overseeing security strategy, team leadership, and the development of comprehensive protection frameworks. He brings extensive experience as a senior Red Team security consultant, specializing in simulating real-world cyber threats through offensive security testing. His expertise spans social engineering, physical security assessments, and technical vulnerability exploitation, enabling organizations to evaluate their defenses comprehensively and implement effective security improvements.
The seminar covered a wide range of topics, including the organizational structure of Iowa State University's Information Technology Services, cybercriminal tactics, real-world phishing case studies, common online scams, and "Hacklore"—the myths and misconceptions surrounding cybersecurity that persist despite lacking factual basis.
With an engaging and humorous presentation style, Tener shared numerous real-life examples to illustrate essential cybersecurity practices. Topics included password management, the importance of multi-factor authentication (MFA), methods for identifying phishing emails, strategies for defending against social engineering attacks, and fundamental principles of physical security.
