National University of Tainan (NUTN) hosted an experiential special education awareness event titled "Seeing Differences, Understanding Every Need" on May 13, 2026, at the University's "Vitality Corner." Jointly organized by the Resource Room of the Special Education Center and the Student Association of the Department of Special Education (Class of 2028), the event attracted enthusiastic participation from faculty members, students, and members of the public interested in inclusive education. Through interactive activities, immersive simulations, and educational exhibits, participants gained firsthand insight into the learning experiences and daily challenges faced by students with disabilities, fostering a deeper understanding of inclusive education and highlighting NUTN's longstanding leadership in special education.
The Department of Special Education at NUTN has long been dedicated to advancing inclusive education, professional training, and student support services. By integrating classroom instruction with community engagement and experiential learning, the department encourages students to translate theoretical knowledge into meaningful educational practice. This event was collaboratively designed by Resource Room staff and special education students, providing participants with authentic opportunities to understand the diverse needs of students with different types of disabilities.
The program featured six interactive experiential stations, each combining educational explanations with hands-on activities and scenario-based simulations. Before beginning each activity, facilitators introduced the characteristics of a specific disability category and explained the objectives of the simulation, helping participants build understanding before engaging in the experience.
The activities addressed a wide range of disability experiences, including hearing impairment, visual impairment, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and attention-deficit and emotional or behavioral challenges. Participants communicated using only body language while deprived of auditory information to experience communication barriers faced by individuals with hearing impairments. Blindfold navigation exercises using white canes allowed participants to appreciate the mobility challenges encountered by people with visual impairments in unfamiliar environments.
Additional activities included wheelchair mobility exercises, reading and text-recognition tasks designed to simulate learning disabilities, and concentration challenges involving distracting sounds and multiple instructions to illustrate the experiences of individuals with attention and emotional or behavioral differences. By transforming abstract concepts into tangible experiences, the program encouraged empathy and demonstrated the importance of accessible environments and effective support systems.
In addition to the experiential activities, the event featured a CRPD Education Corner, introducing the core principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The exhibition highlighted the rights of persons with disabilities and promoted key concepts such as equal participation, reasonable accommodation, accessibility, and social inclusion, encouraging participants to recognize the importance of creating an equitable and inclusive society.
NUTN emphasized that special education extends beyond professional knowledge to encompass understanding, respect, and meaningful action. Through academic programs, practical training, and campus-wide initiatives, the University continues to cultivate inclusive learning environments while preparing future professionals in the field of special education.
By organizing events such as this, NUTN hopes to inspire greater public awareness of diversity and inclusion, encouraging more people to embrace differences and work together to build campuses and communities that are welcoming, equitable, and accessible for all.
