Students from the Department of Physical Education at National University of Tainan (NUTN) recently participated in the 2026 Tainan Adaptive Bean Bag Sport Competition, demonstrating the University's commitment to inclusive sports, adaptive physical education, and community engagement. Led by Professor Po-Jen Hsu, a team of 13 undergraduate and graduate students supported the event by serving as competition officials, referees, and event coordinators, helping create an accessible and welcoming sporting environment for athletes with disabilities.
The competition was held at Anping Junior High School Gymnasium and brought together approximately 170 athletes from more than 20 organizations across Tainan. Including officials, volunteers, and event staff, nearly 300 participants joined the event, reflecting the growing momentum of adaptive sports in the local community.
Bean Bag Sport is an emerging adaptive sport that emphasizes strategy, teamwork, and inclusive participation. With simple rules and low physical demands, the sport enables people of different ages, physical abilities, and backgrounds to compete together, embodying the principles of equal participation and inclusive recreation.
Throughout the event, NUTN students applied the knowledge and skills acquired in courses such as Adaptive Physical Education Practicum by taking responsibility for competition planning, venue management, and officiating. Working directly with athletes of diverse abilities provided valuable practical experience while deepening students' understanding of inclusive sport and the importance of adapting sporting environments to meet individual needs. The experience exemplified NUTN's educational philosophy of integrating academic learning with real-world practice.
Professor Po-Jen Hsu noted that adaptive sports are far more than recreational activities—they are powerful platforms for promoting social inclusion, mutual understanding, and equal opportunities. By encouraging students to engage in community service through professional practice, the department aims to cultivate not only competent physical education professionals but also socially responsible leaders committed to serving diverse communities.
In recent years, NUTN's Department of Physical Education has continued to advance adaptive physical education, inclusive sports, and community outreach while preparing students with both professional expertise and a strong sense of social responsibility.
