In observance of Taiwan’s 2026 National Disaster Prevention Day, National University of Tainan (NUTN) conducted an earthquake evacuation and safety drill at 9:21 a.m. on September 21. The exercise simulated an earthquake emergency and reminded students, faculty, and staff to follow the three essential earthquake safety steps: “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” By practicing protective measures in classrooms, offices, and other everyday spaces, the drill integrated disaster preparedness into daily campus life.

When the earthquake alarm was sounded, students in classrooms immediately lowered themselves, took cover under desks, and held on to the desk legs. Faculty and staff in offices used nearby sturdy furniture for protection. Participants practiced protecting their heads and necks, identifying potential falling hazards, and selecting appropriate places for cover. The exercise also encouraged participants to assess potential risks within their own surroundings and become familiar with appropriate protective measures.

NUTN instructors used the drill as an opportunity to discuss earthquake safety in the context of their classrooms. Students were reminded to identify potential hazards such as glass, lighting fixtures, and cabinets, and to consider suitable places for protection during an earthquake. Participants in NUTN’s Lifelong Learning Program also took part in the exercise, following the same safety procedures during their classes. By involving learners of different ages, the drill helped promote disaster preparedness across the campus community.

The Office of Student Affairs coordinated the drill and notified campus units in advance, while providing students, faculty, and staff with information on earthquake safety and emergency response. Campus safety personnel also monitored the implementation of the drill and assisted individual units throughout the exercise.

Vice President for Student Affairs Fu-Sheng Pai emphasized that earthquakes are unpredictable, making regular preparedness and hands-on practice essential for an effective response. Because different campus spaces have different layouts and potential hazards, students and staff are encouraged to identify nearby areas that can provide protection and remain alert to objects that could fall or overturn during an earthquake.

Through the National Disaster Prevention Day drill, NUTN strengthened earthquake preparedness among students, faculty, staff, and Lifelong Learning Program participants while also reviewing campus emergency communication and response procedures. The University will continue to promote disaster preparedness and safety education, strengthening the campus community’s ability to respond to emergencies and creating a safer environment for learning and work.
